People of
Color in Crisis (POCC)
People of Color in Crisis, Inc., (POCC) was founded in 1988 by a
group of African American and West Indian gay men concerned about
the lack of HIV/AIDS information being given to their community.
POCC is dedicated to honoring, affirming and nurturing the rich and
numerous connections we share with each other. Our mission is to
build community and improve the quality of life and health among
African Americans and Caribbean gay men, men who have sex with men
and bisexual men through advocacy, education and direct services.
Throughout its history, it has been POCC’s mission to provide
effective, culturally relevant services to meet the needs of the
Black gay community. POCC does this by continually assessing the
changing needs of the community, reviewing current research
findings, promoting research specific to the Black gay community,
promoting the development of resources and responding with
culturally and linguistically competent services.

Pride in the
City (PITC)
In 2003, POCC conceptualized the idea of Pride in the City and
identified Black pride celebrations as a unique venue to bring
culturally relevant prevention strategies to the Black gay
community. For the past four years, Pride in the City (PITC) has
been NYC’s premiere Black pride celebration. Pride in the City has
strived to build and affirm the Black lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender (LGBT) community in New York City. By providing
opportunities for cultural celebration, networking, education and
increasing individual member’s connection to community and its
resources. PITC has grown into NYC’s largest Black pride event.
The heart of PITC is the massive HIV Testing and Health Initiative
conducted throughout the events. Through PITC, POCC has established
a coalition of approximately 10 community based organizations and
health care agencies to participate in this community-wide health
awareness campaign to increase access to HIV / STD counseling and
testing, health screenings, and health care services. Over the past
three years, this coalition has been successful in providing free
HIV counseling and testing and health screenings to over 600
individuals! This phenomenal effort brings to the community the
importance of knowing your status and reducing exposure to HIV.
THANK YOU to all the coalition agencies and to YOU, the community,
for your continued support.
