Welcome to the Pride In the City 2008 Website! Here we are again….one year has passed since we met last….Pride in the City….our own self-determined, self-defined celebration of our lives….it has come again……2007…..God whispered in my ears as this year silently stormed through that seven is the number of transformation…..and that this will be a transformative year…… And so how will we be transformed…or better yet have we evolved to a place in which we are open to the kind of transformation that’s needed to heal the open wounds that systemic homophobia has inflicted…the kind of transformation that’s conducive to the deep understanding of our value and our worth…..in a society….in a community….that’s spews rhetorical non-sense of intolerance…and acceptance….and at the same time still invest fully in words and practices that do nothing but attempt to leave indelible marks of pain and misery on our spirits… Have we evolved to that place in which we recognize the beauty in our blackness…in all the complexities of the interwoven fabrics of our blackness…..a celebration of an ancestral greatness… a derivative of brown baptize earth…… Have we gotten to the point in which the reflection that stares back……from that introspective mirror….is one of greatness…and we understand that we have made universal strides that helped and shaped our humanity…a community whose legacy consists of early trans social justice movement…the true birth of our civil rights…..of the blood of Audre Lorde…Barbara Jordan….the voice of Baldwin, James…and Bayard Rustin whose imprint still lays on the pages of our civil rights amendment….have we evolved enough to archive the contributions of our entire community and understand that if not for Paris Dupree……Avis Pendavis…..Dorian Corey….Peppa Labieja…..there would be no Rupaul…if there was no House music…hip hop would have no home……if not for the sissy…..the hyper masculine could have no place to worship….no club for fellowship…..if not for the black and the brown….if not for vogue..and break dance….if not for our voice in spoken word…if not for the vibrant energy that radiates from our collective soul…the back drop of the city that never sleeps….would be in a state of a cosmic coma… And so….Here we go again….Pride in the city…. 2008….our own celebration of self-definition and self-determination……it’s our time…our time to make space and a place where generations after…can peacefully exists in a place they call their own……a place that is all inclusive of us….all of us …..being our authentic us….and if so than the Evolution….our Evolution is just a glance away….it is our divine right and our gift from God…Ashe Michael A.
